| Quote: | 30th June 2007 – Helmi Eliza Alias emerged the hero for Kedah when he stopped two penalties for them to win the 2006-2007 FA Cup final with a 4-2 win in the penalty shootout at the Stadium Negeri Pulau Pinang in Batu Kawan tonight.
The score at the end of regulation and the added extra-time was scoreless.
In the shootout, Helmi was in sterling form when he stopped Zachariah Simikonda and captain Mohd Nazaruddin Zain from scoring.
For Kedah on the other hand, they converted four of their attempts off Mohd Bunyamin Omar, Hasmawi Hassan, Shafizan Hashim and Sabri Abu with the only player not making it is Cornelius Hugging.
In front of a sell-out crowd of 40,000 screaming fans, Kedah and Perlis put up a fine display of attacking football to make sure that there were no lull moments through their intense exchanges.
The action was all even in the first half with Kedah first testing Perlis custodian Tay Sin Kiat in the fourth minute when he blocked a Mohd Khyril Muhymeen attempt from close range.
Perlis’ feeble attempt from Zachariah Simikonda in the 10th minute was replied with Kedah’s Hasmawi Hassan rifling in from 25metres out three minutes later which went well over the crossbar.
With Kedah again unable to score when midfielder Nelson Sam Martin failed to connect a 26th minute cross from K. Soley, the Northern Lions took the initiative to push forward and push Kedah on the back pedal.
But Perlis could do no better in terms of getting on the score sheet when both Mohd Nazaruddin Zain and Phillimon Chepita’s headers within the space of six minutes failed to make head way.
The second half saw both teams carrying on very much on the same vein as they had done the first with neither side attempting to slow the game down.
But it was to be the stout defending of both teams which ultimately denied the change in the scoreline even though the likes of Chepita did create more than his fair share of chances.
As the clock wore on, the game became even intense which was followed by several substitutions as both teams attempt to shore up the fast-tiring lads as they head into the dreaded extra-time.
The two halves of extra-time failed to give due satisfaction to the anxious crowd where despite several chances including a shot from Perlis’ Mohd Redzuan Othman which came off the post, the winning goal was just a little short of the outcome which then forced the game into penalties.
For his performance in between the goal, Kedah custodian Helmi Eliza was chosen as the Man of the Match.
The Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim presented the FA Cup trophy to the winners at the end of the game which was also witnessed by dignitaries from Perlis and also officials from the FA of Malaysia (FAM). :: source from hijaukuning.com |
